Students who are having difficulties in benefiting from curriculum instruction delivered in American-English Language should be referred to the principal or Special Programs Director immediately. Possible candidates for ESL services are students, who because of their background in aural comprehension, speaking, reading, or writing proficiency in American-English are below the average proficiency level of students the same age and/or grade level.

Testing identifies the student’s knowledge of the American-English Language and his/her ability to use knowledge successfully in listening, speaking, reading and writing in informal social settings as well as more formal, demanding instructional settings.

After reviewing the test information, a scheduling of tutorial service will be developed by the classroom teacher and ESL staff. The ESL staff will utilize different types of learning strategies and materials to assist the student in his/her educational transition. Materials for ESL students are provided by Ankeny Community School District.

As the student is learning the American/English language, it is important that every effort be made to provide the student regular education curriculum activities in the normal day-to-day process. This will enable the student to assimilate, as much as possible, the local language, culture, and social interactions with peers. Services are provided PreK-12.
