  • Size and Location

    The Ankeny Community School District is located in Polk County, Iowa, in the heart of the State of Iowa. Six miles from the capitol city of Des Moines, the district:

    • Had a 2015 state-certified enrollment of 10,793.65 students (View certified & projected enrollment here.)
    • Is the 7th largest district in the state (total students served)
    • Has been one of the fastest-growing school districts in Iowa for more than a decade, averaging growth of 365 students annually for the last ten years
    • Encompasses 16 school buildings in 51.93 square miles
    • Has a K-5, 6-7, 8-9, 10-12 grade level structure
    • Has more than 360,540 miles driven by buses per year
  • Academics

    Ankeny Schools provide an exemplary and balanced curricular and co-curricular program designed to meet the needs of all students. Some of the accomplishments Ankeny students have achieved are listed below. (Note: Due to reporting timelines, some statistics are newer than others.)

    • 93.5% graduation rate; state average: 90.8% (2014-2015 - state reporting is one year in arrears)

    • 16,500 Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) credits earned by Ankeny students (2015-2016)
    • 249,122 DMACC credits have been earned by AHS students since 2000-2001 through a partnership with DMACC.

    • Four National Merit Scholarship Commended Students (2015-2016)
    • One United States Presidential Scholars Program Candidate (2015-2016)
    • 77 seniors scored 30 or higher on the ACT (2014-2015)

    • 87 students earning AP Scholar Awards; 19 with distinction, and 30 with honor (2014-2015)

    • Ranked top 40 in the state with a 1.09 AP Index as calculated by Belin and Blank Iowa AP Index (2015-2016); (Ratio of AP exams taken by ACSD students divided by the number of graduating seniors)
    • 97 students graduated with an honors diploma (2016)
    • 123 seniors graduated with a weighted grade point average of 4.0. (2015-2016)
    • 89% of the class of 2016 intend to pursue post-secondary education/training.
    • On average, 36.6% advanced proficiency in reading, according to the Iowa Assessments. (2015-2016)

    • On average, 33.6% advanced proficiency in science, according to the Iowa Assessments. (2015-2016)

    • More than 86% of grades 3-11 scored proficient at every grade level in reading, with more than 90% proficient in 4th, 9th, 10th and 11th grades, according to the Iowa Assessments. (2015-2016)

    Ankeny Community Schools have a rich heritage of excellence in athletics, arts and activities. We field numerous competitive teams and are often in the running for conference and state championships - both in team and individual events. During the 2013-2014 school year, students achieved:

    Athletics

    • 55 students signed letters of intent to play collegiate sports or as preferred walk-ons
    • 5 Conference Champions
    • 1 Divisional Champion
    • 14 state tournament appearances
    • 85 All-Conference Athletes
    • 192 All-Academic Team Athletes
    • 11 First Team All-State Athletes

    Instrumental Music

    • 2 students selected for All-State Band
    • 7 students selected for South Central Iowa Bandmasters Association honor band
    • 2 Division I ratings at the Iowa Music Association State Marching Band Contest
    • 2 Division I ratings at the Iowa Music Association State Marching Band Contest
    • 1st place at Pella Marching Invitational
    • 3rd place at Linn-Mar Marching Festival; 3rd place at Hoover Jazz Festival; 3rd place at the Five Seasons Marching Festival

    Vocal Music

    • 7 students selected for All-State Choir
    • 8th place at Nashville Show Choir Nationals in Nashville
    • Grand Champion at Marion Show Choir Festival
    • Varsity First Runner-Up and Best Vocals, as well as Prep Division First Runner-Up at Mount Pleasant Music Inmotion Invitational
    • First Runner-up at the Viterbo, Linn-Mar and Urbandale show choir competitions
    • Second runner-up, Best Vocals and Prep Division first-runner up at Gretna Primetime Classic
    • Three best choreography awards, three best vocals, best band, best female soloist, best instrumentalist
    • Prep Women’s Division Champion and Mixed Prep First Runner-Up at Urbandale

    Cheer and Dance

    • Three state championships in jazz and pom dance
    • Third place in lyrical dance, kick and pom dance
    • Twelve dance team soloists received Division I ratings at state
    • Two color guard soloists received Division I ratings at state
    • First place overall varsity UCA Camp Champion; Second place overall JV UCA Camp Champion

    Debate

    • 2 National Tournament of Champions debate qualifiers

    Speech

    • 15 Division I ratings in state group speech
