ANKENY, Iowa (February 24, 2016) - Ankeny students spent their no school day "bugging-out" with the Before and After-School Program at Westwood Elementary on February 15.

The Iowa State University Insect Zoo introduced children to the world of bugs and insects during “Bug-tastic” camp. Kindergarteners to fifth graders were able to interact with a variety of bugs including leaf insects, beetles, hermit crabs, walking sticks, tarantulas, a black widow spider (for viewing purposes only), and more.  The ISU traveling exhibit allowed student to interact with some bugs they make not see on a regular basis.

After students investigated various insects, they learned about the many benefits of maggots while creating works of art with live maggots.  The clean, corn-meal-raised maggots were put into cups of paint before students placed the paint-covered maggots onto paper and studied their movement as they crawled around, creating a work of art.

“We used maggots as paintbrushes,” said Calen VanHouton, kindergartener.

“It was so fun,” second grader Cade Buenting said. “I loved the maggots crawling around.”

The students were able to take home their maggot-created masterpiece paintings.

About the Before And-After School Program

The Before and After-School Program is a safe, fun, hands-on enrichment program that serves students in Kindergarten through fifth grade at all 10 Ankeny Community School District elementary schools.  The program provides a variety of high-quality, disguised learning opportunities focused on science, arts, recreation, and technology.  The program is developed using research-based best practices for out-of-school time and is not just a place for students to “be” before and after school, but to engage in fun, high-quality, meaningful experiences.

In addition to providing a school-year before and after school program, day camp opportunities are also provided for students on no-school days, winter break, spring break, and summer break.
