Ankeny Educator Receives Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching

ANKENY, Iowa (August 24, 2016) -  President Obama named Parkview Middle School science teacher Lynne Bleeker one of 213 teachers in the nation as a recipient of the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching. The educators will receive their awards at a ceremony in Washington, D.C. on September 8.

The Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching is awarded to outstanding K-12 science and mathematics teachers from across the country. The winners are selected by a panel of distinguished scientists, mathematicians, and educators following an initial selection process at the state level.  One state finalist each from K-6 science, K-6 math, 7-12 science, and 7-12 math is then selected for national recognition.

Lynne Bleeker is the second teacher from Parkview Middle School to achieve this award in the past ten years.

“Mrs. Bleeker’s dedication to her students and her profession is evident in the heartfelt way in which she approaches teaching,” said Jeff Schumacher, Parkview Middle School Principal. “Her commitment to her students as individuals is unparalleled, and we join the President in honoring and congratulating her for her outstanding work.”

Winners of this Presidential honor receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation to be used at their discretion, and are invited to Washington, D.C., for an awards ceremony, as well educational and celebratory events, and visits with members of the Administration.
