202.50 Student School Board Representatives

The Board of Education believes in the importance of including student voice in matters related to the district’s educational program. To gather this perspective, the Board shall include two (2) non-voting representative(s) from the student body.

The student school board representatives shall be full-time tenth, eleventh, and/or twelfth grade students in the Ankeny Community School District. One representative shall be a student at Ankeny High School. One representative shall be a student at Centennial High School. The student school board representatives shall be selected by the administrative teams of their respective high schools.  Each high school shall develop a process for selecting their representative and shall ensure that the process is equitable, inclusive, and does not preference any student or group of students due to their membership in a protected class.

The student school board representatives shall participate in an orientation of board responsibilities and procedures as determined by the superintendent/designee. The Board President shall provide the student school board representatives with the Board Members’ Code of Ethics; the student school board representatives shall abide by all applicable sections of this Code.

In keeping with law and policy, the student school board representatives shall be eligible to participate in discussion, but shall not vote, at all regular board meetings held in open session.  They shall not attend closed or exempt sessions and any other board meetings lawfully not open to the public.

The student school board representatives shall not be counted when determining if a quorum of board members is present.

The student school board representatives shall be responsible for gathering input on issues from the student bodies they represent and for communicating board decisions and information to the district’s students.

Each student school board representative’s term shall last for one school year.  The term shall commence at the first regular board meeting in September of the school year and end at the last regular board meeting in May of the same school year.

If a student school board representative is unable to attend a board meeting, the student school board representative must notify the superintendent of the absence. A student school board representative who neglects his/her duties may be removed from the position at the discretion of the Board.
