Interior Design - 1 credit (one semester, Spring semester only)
This course is designed for students who want to learn basic decorating techniques for their own bedroom or future home, or as an introduction to a career in interior design. Course content includes: floor plans, principles and elements of design, wall coverings, window coverings and floor coverings.
Relationships in Reality - 1 credit (one semester, Fall semester only)
This course encourages students to examine their beliefs and expectations about being a part of a family and finding a life-long partner. Course content includes dating, love, marriage, marriage laws and customs, sexuality, contraceptives, children, divorce, death and grieving.
Child Development - 1 credit (one semester, Spring semester only)
Child Development is a specialized course that prepares students to understand the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual growth and development of children from infant through age twelve. The course is designed to help young people acquire knowledge and skills essential to the care and guidance of children as a parent or caregiver. Emphasis is placed on helping students create an environment for children that will promote optimum development.
Parenthood - 1 credit (one semester, Fall semester only)
Parenthood is a course for anyone who wants to be a parent in the future. Students will study the decision to be a parent, male/female anatomy, contraceptives, STI’s, prenatal care, pregnancy, labor and delivery. Students will also be responsible for caring for “Baby Think it Over” for a weekend. This course will be taught on alternating years based on student registration.
Fashion Analysis and Design - 1 credit (one semester, Fall semester only)
Prerequisite: Recommended Fashion Merchandising
Recommended for students in pursuing a fashion or design related degree and/or career. This is a semester course that introduces you to the fashion industry. Course emphasis is the many scaffolding phases of the apparel industry. Fashion terms, styles, capitals and designers will be researched and discussed. Design elements and design principles will be studied and applied to the retail industry. Students will use presentations modes, creative design applications, and writing exercises to express knowledge in all areas. Students will study fashion history, cycles and trends in order to develop prediction patterns to design a group line and marketing strategies. Consumerism and fashion related careers will be explored. Students will design a professional portfolio throughout the semester for key fashion strategies.. During this course students will enroll in the aligned 3 credit DMACC course APP 260 Fashion Analysis and Design.
Textiles - 1 credit (one semester, Spring semester only)
Prerequisite: Fashion Analysis and Design
Recommended for students interested in pursuing a fashion or design related degree and/or career. This is a semester course designed to develop a skill and knowledge of characteristics of natural and man-made fibers; the qualities, cost, and weaves in manufacturing and finishing processes of textiles, fibers, yarns and fabrics; and knowledge of appropriate fabrics for various uses. During this course students will be engaged in designing and sewing teacher guided and student guided projects. Students can receive 3 college credits with DMACC by successfully completing this course with the potential for an additional 2 DMACC credits with the completion of an electronic portfolio. During this course students will enroll in the aligned 3 credit DMACC course as APP211 Textiles.
Introduction to Foods - 1 credit (one semester)
Prerequisite: None *Note-This is the same course as Introduction to Foods at Northview and cannot be repeated
This one semester course emphasizes the basics of food preparation and nutrition. Students will be engaged in open forum learning with the unique opportunity to directly apply the content taught to prepare, taste, and evaluate food. The following areas will be covered: safety and sanitation in the kitchen, measuring and using recipes, nutrients, beef, poultry, vegetables, fruits, eggs, quick breads, pie, dairy products and knife skills. This course is recommended for everyone interested in learning an independent living skill. Facial piercing(s) need to be removed during class time.
Food Prep I (Silver Cat Café) - 2 credits (one semester)
Prerequisite: Intro to Foods
This block class is a more advanced study of food preparation skills. Students will gain food service skills and knowledge by operating a simulated food service operation from the classroom. Units covered will include: safety, sanitation, kitchen terms, kitchen tools, baking basics, knives and garnishes, salads, fruits, vegetables, grain products, dairy, meat, soups, sauces, stocks, puddings, yeast breads, eggs, and seafood. During this course students will enroll in the aligned 3 credit DMACC course HCM 143 Food Prep I and the 3 credit DMACC course HCM 144 Food Prep Lab. Facial piercing(s) need to be removed during class time.
Teacher Academy: Intro to Education - 2 credits (one semester, Fall Semester)
Prerequisite: Junior or Senior - students who enroll in this course must be able to provide their own transportation to schools
This course presents a broad overview of the field of education including: foundations and structure of American education; roles of teachers and students; history and philosophy; current laws and legal responsibilities of schools and teachers, including multicultural and gender equity issues, effective teaching practices used by teachers; classroom management and discipline practices; professional affiliations, mentoring and peer coaching; curriculum development that focuses on improved student outcomes; career research and decisions. The class meets daily for two periods. Students will spend two days each week in the high school classroom and three days each week completing a practicum at the local elementary or middle school level. Students will be at two locations and grade levels during the semester, changing after nine weeks. Field trips and guest speakers are included. Daily attendance is a top priority. During this course, students will enroll in the aligned 3 credit DMACC course, EDU213 Intro to Education. Students must take Teacher Academy: Intro to Education PRIOR to Teacher Academy: Internship in Education to earn all 5 credits in the Teacher Academy Program.
Teacher Academy: Internship in Education - 2 credits (one semester, Spring semester)
Prerequisite:Junior or Senior - students who enroll in this course must be able to provide their own transportation to schools
Teacher Academy is for students who have a special interest in working with children. An opportunity is provided to assist in an elementary or middle school classroom to assess one’s potential and interest in a teaching career. Students spend the first few days of the semester in class at the high school receiving directions and selecting their school. In subsequent weeks, students attend class at the high school on Tuesdays, and Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Monday, participate at the elementary and middle schools. Choices include regular classrooms, specials (art, physical education, music or guidance) or special education. The class meets daily for two successive class periods. Students will be at two locations and grade levels during the semester, changing after nine weeks. Field trips, guest speakers and career opportunities add to the practicality of the course. Daily attendance is a top priority. Students can receive dual credit with DMACC by successfully completing this course, if they have first successfully completed EDU213 Intro to Education. During this course students will enroll in the aligned 3 credit DMACC course EDU218 Initial Field Experience. Students can take this course without first taking Intro to Education, but will not receive the 5 credits for the Teacher Academy Advantage Program.
