Devin lives with his grandfather on a farm. He does his chores, reluctantly, like a teen-age boy. When Devin's grandfather dies suddenly, Devin is left to fend for himself. He is the only one that can take care of the farm, but how can he do it all alone? Devin sets out to find help in the city, but he has never been there before. All of the new people, places, and things bewilder him. Kit is a runaway that has learned to survive the best she can, alone on the streets. Kit takes Devin under wing, and teaches him how to survive. A stranger offers the two of them a Safe Place, where they can take showers, get clean clothes, sleep in a bed and eat when they are hungry. Who couyld say no to that? Kit knows things are too good to be true, but it is hard to argue with Devin's reasoning, "Why live on the streets?"
