Ms. Karen O'Loughlin

Welcome. My name is Karen O'Loughlin (Mrs. O). I have been teaching high school in Ankeny since 1990. I have taught multiple math and computer science classes during my tenure in Ankeny.  My passion is to encourage more students to get interested in computer science and STEM related fields.

I help sponsor the Cyber Defense club that meets Tuesdays after school. Email me if you have questions about Cyber Defense.

My interest in computer science and my own love for learning has allowed me to get involved with many STEM related experiences. I am an AP reader for AP Computer Science A (Java) and thus get to grade exams for one week in the summer with colleagues from across the United States and from other countries.  I have participated in two Teacher Externships sponsored by the Iowa Governor’s Stem Initiatives. These experiences have been in technology related fields and have allowed me to share work habits from the real world with my students.  In 2017, I was also honored with the NCWIT Iowa Affiliate Educator Award for Aspirations in Computing Award for teachers.

I am a home grown Iowan, growing up on a farm in NE Iowa. I preferred doing outside chores to housework. I was involved in band, drama, basketball, track, National Honor Society and 4H. I attended Mount Mercy College earning a double major in Mathematics and History with a minor in education. I received my Masters of School Mathematics from Iowa State University.
