Degrees and Certifications:
Miss Mia Nelson
Fourth Grade Teacher
I am thrilled to be teaching fourth grade at Westwood Elementary! My name is Mia Nelson. I graduated from the University of Iowa (go Hawks!) in 2015 with a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and speicialized in Reading, Language Arts, and Science. I recieved my Master's degree from Drake University in 2019.
I was born and raised in West Des Moines, growing up with one older sister and one younger sister. In 2014, I gained my first brother(-in-law) when my older sister, Siri, married her now-husband, David. They have two kids, Sage and Chase, who are a huge part of my life. Siri graduated from South Dakota State (go Jackrabbits!) and my younger sister, Kara, graduated from Iowa State (a less enthusastic "go Cyclones"). When I am not at school, my hobbies include kayaking, reading a great book, and spending time with my family and friends.
Through my late teenage years and early twenties, I coached gymnastics in West Des Moines, where I learned that helping students reach their goals in life is a strong passion of mine. I made the commitment when I became a teacher to be a lifelong learner in order to provide the best instruction to help your child learn, grow, and find success this year!
