Mr. Andy Umthun

Welcome to Ankeny High School, Home of the Hawks and Hawkettes! I am extremely humbled to be given the opportunity to serve the students, parents, staff, and the entire community of Ankeny.

I am originally from north central Iowa but moved to Des Moines prior to my freshmen year of high school and attended Dowling Catholic High School in West Des Mones. There I participated in football, track & field, and band. These experinces of being a student-athlete is where my passion for what activities bring to the table originated, as well as unknowingly prepared me to embrace the many challenges of being an Activities Director. I attended the University of Northern Iowa after high school, majoring in Physical Education, Health Education, and Athletic Coaching. While attending UNI, I was a member of the UNI Rugby Team for three years and also coached two years of football at NU High.

My first teaching and coaching opportunity after college was at Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools in Sioux City, Iowa. I spent six years at Bishop Heelan teaching physical education, health education, exercise science, as well as running a school-wide strength & conditioning program. I was also a Varsity Assistant Football and Track & Field Coach all six years I was there while also coaching some freshmen/JV boys basketball for three. I began working on my MSE in PK-12 School Administration through Wayne State College towards the end of my tenure at Bishop Heelan.

In 2013 I accepted a position with the Estherville Lincoln Central Community School District in Estherville, IA where I became the 7-12 Activities Director/Assistant Principal as well as the Varsity Head Football Coach. This was a unbelieveable opportunity as a first time administrator and head coach and is one that I am very thankful for as it was a great learning experince where I grew alot under some great colleagues and created some great relationships that I still have today. I spent the last two years at Xavier High School in Cedar Rapids, IA where I was able to strengthen my skillsets in the role of an Activities Director, working within another great administrative team. The growth that took place at Xavier really propelled me to new heights. Having the opportunity to tackle many big projects at ELC and Xavier in the Activities Director role has really helped prepare myself for this great opportunity here in Ankeny.

My family is extremely important to me, and they have been extremely supportive of my dreams which I would not be ready for this great challenge without their support. My fiance Morgan and I plan to wed in December of this year, and she is the rock behind the scenes that supports my endeavors while ensuring we take advantage of the qualitity time we do get. She is one of the biggest Hawk/Hawkette fans around, embracing the AD lifestyle that comes with a position such as this.

Thank you for the support of our Hawks and Hawkettes!
