Ankeny Schools Launches Food Pantries to Support Students and Families

Check out the latest episode of the “Learning Brought to Life” series, where Ankeny Schools’ Community Engagement Specialist, Madisen Gaskin, is joined by staff members Leah Clark (Social Worker), Erin Van Dorin (Associate Principal, BEYOND & Summit High School), and Shawn Beirman (Social Emotional Learning Specialist). They discuss the opening of school-based food pantries in partnership with the Food Bank of Iowa.
The pantries, located at Northview Middle School and the Summit/BEYOND High School program, provide students and their families with food, toiletries, and other essentials. “It’s about more than just meals—it’s about supporting the whole family,” said Erin Van Dorin. These pantries also offer students work experience opportunities, helping them develop important skills.
In addition to food, students can access personal hygiene items, and volunteers can earn Silver Cord hours while gaining practical experience. “This initiative is a step toward building a connected, supportive school community,” added Leah Clark.
