FAQ
My child has a Smartwatch. Are they allowed to wear this?
Smartwatches are allowed to be worn to tell time. However, during school hours, any features that function similarly to a cell phone (e.g., messaging, calls, browsing) must be disabled.
What if something comes up (e.g. my child’s transportation plans change), and they need to communicate with me?
They can communicate their need to a nearby adult and ask to access to a phone.
What if my child relies on a smartphone for medical, translation, or for other school-based accommodations?
Ankeny Schools allow for devices that provide accommodations through an official school plan (e.g. IEP, 504, Health Plan, ESOL services, etc.) and expect those devices to only be used for the purpose of providing the accommodations.
My child likes to listen to music during study hall or the passing period. Is this allowed?
Listening to music for entertainment or watching videos with a non-instructional purpose is not considered acceptable use.
If I need to contact my child immediately, what should I do?
Parents/Guardians are always welcome to call the school’s main office to reach their child. The building will ensure your child is contacted and/or retrieved to speak with you promptly.
