ANKENY, Iowa (May 24, 2017) - Southview students earned top scores in Iowa on the National Spanish Exam. Three Spanish I students scored in the top three, nine placed in the top ten, and nine Spanish II students earned top ten rankings in Iowa. In all, 119 Southview students earned state gold, silver, bronze, or honorable mention medals.
This year 216 Spanish students at Southview took the exam, up from 95 last year, and 53 in 2015. Nationally, over 157,000 students take the exam across five levels.
"What started as a prerequisite to get into college evolved into something with a lot more meaning," said Hayden McCutchan, gold medal winner. "I am now more aware of the cultural, societal, and linguistic ideals of Spanish speaking countries. Learning Spanish has opened a lot of doors and allowed me to grow in character and knowledge."
These kids are great Spanish learners and speakers who are developing a useful and entertaining life-long skill,” said Sarah Gubbels, Spanish teacher.
The Southview Spanish teachers include Gubbels, Cat Mahoney, Andrea Olson, and Jim Robidoux.
