ANKENY, Iowa (September 28, 2017) - The Ankeny Marching Hawks earned second place and Best Color Guard at the Marching Dutch Invitational in Pella. The band competed against five other class 4A marching bands from Waukee, West Des Moines Valley, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Marshalltown, and Newton.
“This was a strong first competitive showing for the Marching Hawks," said Jennifer Williams, director. "They have made significant growth as musicians, marchers, and performers this season."
“We overcame the obstacle of the heat to have a solid performance,” said junior Evan Lyons, drum major.
This year’s show is entitled “The Way West” and includes original music by Frank Sullivan.
The band will perform at Valleyfest Showdown on Saturday, October 7 at 9:15 pm. Their final performance of the season will take place at Ankeny’s own Mid-Iowa Band Championships on October 17 at 10:00 p.m.
AHS Marching Hawks are under the direction of Jennifer Williams and Joel Poppen. Other directors include Nathan Newhard, Crystal Rumbaugh, Pam Hayden, and Christian Baughman. The staff includes Darrin Mell, Elizabeth Lovell, and Tenea Fabray.
