ANKENY, Iowa (December 6, 2017) - The Ankeny High School winter guard won the state title in Class III Color Guard during the annual Iowa State Drill Team Association Competition (ISDTA) at the Iowa Events Center on December 1. The AHS team competed against ten other schools in their class. This is the guard’s third consecutive first place finish at the state competition.
“I am so proud of the dedication, teamwork, and determination that this group has shown,” said Darrin Mell, choreographer and coach. “We keep pushing them further, year after year, and they keep stepping it up and exceeding our expectations.”
The guard also earned a Distinguished Academic Achievement Award for earning a GPA of more than 3.5 for the 2016-2017 school year.
Members of the winter guard include: Kayli Abarr, Tia Beenblossom, Ciara Brown, Joe Cave, Madeline Cisneros, Abi Coglizer, Anna Escherich, Rachel Heitz, Lexi Higar, Olivia Johnson, Rebecca Maire, Claire McGohan, Abby Nagel, Savanna Scholl, Dasha Toth, and Molly Wick.
Coaches for the AHS winter guard are Darrin Mell, Liz Lovell, and Jennifer Williams.
