ANKENY, Iowa (May 22, 2018) - Southview Middle School students had a chance to learn while giving back to the school and community through the Southview Service Day on May 22. Meals from the Heartland, a nonprofit organization that packages meals for delivery to malnourished people in Iowa, across the United States, and around the world, sponsored a 30,000 meal packaging event at the school, giving students an opportunity to lend a hand in saving the starving.
Students also hosted a community concert for retired residents, helped with landscaping outside of the school, wrote postcards to soldiers and sick children, and learned about nonprofit agencies and how they can get involved through a "service fair."
Organizations that participated in the service fair included the ARL, Dress for Success, Food Bank of Iowa, New Horizons, Everybody Wins!, Habitat for Humanity, YESS, Ankeny YMCA, On With Life, Unity Point, Salvation Army, Goodwill, Big Brother Big Sister, TAKE, Orchard Place, Love Lunches, Amanda the Panda, Project Fresh Start, 211 United Way and Services, and Ankeny Service Center.
