The Ankeny High School Marching Hawks brought home two first place wins and several section awards on Saturday, September 29.
At Bands Across the Prairie in Cedar Rapids, the Marching Hawks earned first place and best guard in Class 4A against ten other 4A bands. That evening the band competed at the Urbandale Marching Band Invitational and earned first place, best percussion, and best guard in Class 4A.
“The kids handled the day really well," said band director Joel Poppen. "They performed well, especially with the adverse weather conditions.”
“This past weekend has proven that we are willing to work hard and improve, no matter the circumstances,” said junior commander Lauren Walters. “We have shown tremendous growth, and will continue to grow as the season progresses.”
This year’s show is entitled “BachXed In,” the music of JS Bach, arranged by Frank Sullivan and Dr. Jonathan Sharp.
The band will perform at Valleyfest Showdown on Saturday, October 6 at 9:00 p.m. Their final performance of the season will be at Ankeny’s own Mid-Iowa Band Championships on October 13 at 8:15 p.m.
AHS Marching Hawks are under the direction of Jennifer Williams and Joel Poppen. Other directors include Nathan Newhard, Crystal Rumbaugh, Pam Hayden, and Christian Baughman. Staff includes Darrin Mell, Elizabeth Lovell, & Tenea Fabray.
