Ankeny Schools to Conduct Controlled Burns

Ankeny Community School District's burn permit runs from January 1, 2020, until June 1, 2020, work will be done as site conditions allow during this time-frame.  Locations of the controlled-burns include:
  • Rock Creek Elementary
  • Ankeny Centennial High School
  • Southview Middle School
  • Prairie Trail Elementary
  • Bus Barn
  • Maintenance Department
Natural and native areas need periodic fires to thrive and prescribed burning is an important, cost-effective tool for maintaining and restoring native plant communities and wildlife habitats, managing invasive species, and reducing wildfire danger. Many of the plants and animals of Iowa’s woodlands, prairies, and wetlands are fire-adapted.

Although the burns are conducted in a manner to minimize smoke impact to nearby roadways and neighborhoods, residents and businesses adjacent to these areas are encouraged to keep windows closed during the burn. Prescribed burns will normally be conducted between sunrise and sunset on the day of the burn.

Ankeny School District grounds crew, trained in wildland firefighting, are working with local fire rescue agencies, police, and county health department to ensure safe, successful burn events.
