ANKENY, Iowa (April 25, 2016) - The Southview Middle School eighth grade knowledge bowl team won the State Knowledge Bowl Championship for the second year in a row. The competition was April 21 at Merle Hay Mall in Des Moines.
The championship team includes: Carter Tams, Sam Wu, Jake Staab, Jackson Porter and Nathan Greiner. A second team from Southview placed third in the state finals. The third place team includes Jake Swanepoel, Luke Lilienthal, Sam Belding, Andi Califf and Caleb Skow. Both teams are coached by Nathan Coombes.
"Its amazing and exciting the energy and motivation that the students
have towards learning and competing," said Coombes. "I'm very proud of the these
students. The fact that we had two teams make it this far in the state
competition is an incredible task. It shows we have great faculty,
staff, and students at Southview."
During the competition, students are asked questions on topics including history, geography, science, health, English, math and other subjects. Fourteen teams qualified for the Iowa State Knowledge Bowl finals.
