We Love a Parade!

ANKENY, Iowa (June 1, 2016) - Southeast Elementary kicked off summer reading in style.  The school is the Iowa winner for the first-ever Dav Pilkey “Be a Reading Superhero” educator contest. The contest, part of the 2016 Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge, provides a new book for every student to take home and read over the summer.
Southeast celebrated with a parade on May 31.  Each class dressed-up according to their chosen book theme, local radio stations and the Ankeny police and fire departments were on-hand, Ankeny teachers provided festive music, and Superintendent Dr. Bruce A. Kimpston served as grand marshal.
“We are so excited to be a part of this contest,” said Joy DeJong, fifth grade teacher. “We encourage all students to read throughout the summer, and we’re hopeful that a new book will continue the passion for reading that Ankeny students show throughout the year.”
The Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge is focused on keeping kids reading all summer, an activity that is key to a lifetime of personal success.
“When it comes to kids and reading, there’s no such thing as a guilty pleasure,” said Dav Pilkey, international bestselling author and creator of the phenomenally popular Captain Underpants series. “Even though I struggled with reading growing up because of my dyslexia, I was fortunate to have parents who encouraged me to choose the books I wanted to read: silly books with tons of illustrations that made me laugh out loud. And if it weren’t for these books that motivated me to keep turning the page, I wouldn’t be the writer I am today. Summer is a great time to discover the fun and joy of reading and I am honored to be the global ambassador of the Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge campaign.”
