Joel Martin Named Westwood Elementary Principal

ANKENY, Iowa (April 11, 2017) - Pending approval by the Ankeny Board of Education April 17, the Ankeny Community School District is pleased to announce Mr. Joel Martin as the new principal for Westwood Elementary School. Mr. Martin is currently co-principal at Perry Elementary School. Previously, he served as the pre-kindergarten through fifth grade associate principal and district preschool administrator.

“I am pleased to welcome Joel Martin to Ankeny Schools and to our administrative team,” said Dr. Bruce A. Kimpston, Superintendent of Schools. “I was impressed with Joel’s diversity of experiences. These experiences, along with his passion for being an administrator in Ankeny, will serve Westwood Elementary students, parents, and staff well.”

“Joining Westwood Elementary and the Ankeny Community School District is a wonderful opportunity,” said Martin. “I am looking forward to meeting the students, families, and staff.  I am honored to serve the community and support its history of academic excellence.”

Martin’s experience in building a strong climate and culture for all students in Perry, as well as his work in literacy and Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) implementation were seen as advantages for the position. In addition to his administrative positions, Martin’s more than 13 years in education includes experience teaching fourth grade in Honduras and Texas, reading specialist in Kansas, and seventh and eighth grade reading teacher in Redfield, Iowa.

Martin holds a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa and a Master of Science in School Leadership from Baker University in Wichita, Kansas.

Mr. Martin is originally from Mason City, Iowa and is married to Jamie Martin. The couple has two beagles and will be adopting a baby girl in July.

Mr. Martin will officially begin his new role July 1, 2017.  He succeeds Dr. Amy Dittmar, who will take on a new role within the Ankeny Community School District as the Director of Elementary Services.
