ANKENY, Iowa (June 20, 2018) –Northview eighth grader Eric Hou is among the top 15 in the nation at the 2018 National You Be The Chemist™ Challenge.  Representatives from each state, Puerto Rico, and Washington, D.C. answered science and chemistry-related questions throughout the day-long competition.  Hou made it farther than any other student in Iowa in the history of the contest.

“This year’s competition was fierce,” said Chemical Education Foundation (CEF) Executive Director Dwayne Sattler. “At CEF we are incredibly proud of how this Challenge has instilled an interest in chemistry for middle school students across the country. Over the past 14 years, we’ve watched this program grow and inspire STEM majors and careers."

TheYou Be The Chemist Challenge is targeted to students in grades 5-8 when most U.S. students have not studied chemistry as its own subject.  The National Challenge is the culmination of local and state Challenges.  This year approximately 46,000 students participated in Challenge events across the country.

Seventh grader Shreyas Arcot, from Glen Allen, Virginia won the national title.
