504.50 Use of Motor Vehicles

The Board recognizes the convenience to families and students of having students drive to and park at their school attendance center. Driving a motor vehicle to and parking it at the student's attendance center is a privilege and subject to availability. Students who wish to drive to and park at their school attendance center shall comply with the rules and regulations established by the building principal and in accordance to the student handbooks. Failure to comply with this policy or District rules shall be reason for revocation of school driving and parking privileges, as well as other disciplinary action including suspension and expulsion.

Students who drive to and park at their school attendance center shall only drive to and park at their designated attendance center. Students may not loiter around or be in their vehicle during the school day without permission from the principal/designee. Students shall leave their attendance center when there is no longer a legitimate reason for them to be at their attendance center. Students who drive shall enter and leave the parking lot by the routes designated by the principal/designee.

Students may be eligible for a school driving permit, for driving to and from school and school activities and practices. To be eligible the student must meet ALL of the following criteria:

  • Live one mile or more from attendance center and
  • Enrolled in Grades 9-12; and
  • Proof of the successful completion of a certified driver’s education program; and
  • Possess a learner’s permit for at least six months.

Students will submit the application for a school permit to the Superintendent/designee. The Superintendent/designee may consider permits for students living less than one mile from the attendance center if presented with extra-ordinary circumstances. Student who are issued a school permit are subject to the regulations of the State of Iowa’s Department of Transportation including the prohibition on using electronic communication devices or entertainment devices while driving. If a parent disagrees with the District’s decision to deny the permit, they may appeal to the Ankeny Board of Education. The Board’s decision is final.
