Name of New Elementary

Abbiegrove

Abbie Grove Elementary has been chosen as the name for the Ankeny Community School District’s twelfth elementary. The school is set to open in the Fall of 2024.

A naming committee convened in the fall to determine a name. The committee developed three potential names for the building and, after seeking input from the Ankeny community, chose the name Abbie Grove. Abbie Grove represents the area of Ankeny where the elementary school is located, referencing the street (Abbie Road) and the development (the Grove).

The district officially broke ground on the new elementary building in March of 2022. Abbie Grove will be the sixth elementary school in the north feeder for the district. The new building is located in the Grove development at NW 18th St and NW Abbie Dr. The five-section building will serve kindergarten to fifth grade and have a capacity of up to 800 students.

“We are excited to welcome Abbie Grove Elementary as our newest elementary school,” said Dr. Erick Pruitt, Superintendent of Ankeny Schools. “The name of the school is a nod to the past, but there is no doubt that opening a new elementary school is a sign of a continued bright future in Ankeny. We look forward to welcoming students, families, and staff into this building for the 2024-2025 school year.”

An additional school is needed to accommodate the district’s ongoing growth, as Ankeny remains one of the fastest-growing school districts in Iowa. Enrollment growth has averaged 250 students annually for the past five years and is expected to grow by an average of 260 students per year over the next five years.

Abbie Grove Elementary is being funded utilizing the S.A.V.E. state penny sales tax.
