Celebrating through Creative Expression: A Reflection on Service and Education

Give back to your community artwork

In commemoration of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, our school community came together to honor the enduring ideals of Dr. King through a creative expression competition. Students of all ages, along with dedicated staff members, were invited to submit works of visual, literary, and performing arts that conveyed their interpretation of the following Dr. King’s ideal: “It starts with me. Developing a positive culture and climate through service and education.”

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who participated in this meaningful event, contributing their unique perspectives and talents to foster a deeper understanding of Dr. King’s teachings. The creative entries were a testament to the power of art and expression in conveying messages of unity, service, and education.

Here are the contributions from the competition:

  1. Greta Lee (9th grade, Northview Middle School): “The Appreciation of Me” Greta’s literary arts contribution delves into the concept of self-appreciation, echoing Dr. King’s emphasis on personal responsibility in creating positive change.
  2. Piper Kellner (8th grade, Northview Middle School): Untitled Poem Piper’s untitled poem reflects the poetic beauty of Dr. King’s vision, encapsulating the essence of service and education through the art of words.
  3. Savannah Commons Potts (10th grade, Centennial High School): “Giving Back to Your Community” Savannah’s visual arts contribution, titled “Giving Back to Your Community,” visually explores the impact of service on community development, aligning with Dr. King’s principles.
  4. Renee J. Potts (Staff Member): Untitled Essay Renee J. Potts made a significant contribution through an untitled essay, offering a unique perspective on the theme and enriching the diversity of creative expressions.

We would like to express special recognition to Mrs. Renee Potts for her instrumental role in organizing and facilitating this inspiring event. Her dedication and effort were crucial in bringing the community together for this celebration of creativity and reflection.

Additionally, our heartfelt thanks go to Reyna Immerfall, who generously provided gift cards for the participants. Reyna’s support enhanced the experience for all involved, and we are truly grateful for her contribution to the success of the event.

In conclusion, the Creative Expression Competition served as a platform for our school community to unite in the spirit of Dr. King’s teachings. Through the language of art, participants shared their visions of creating a positive culture and climate through service and education, echoing the timeless message that change begins with each individual. We look forward to more opportunities to celebrate and reflect on the values that continue to inspire us as a community.
